You may not believe it but most burglars do not plan their break ins. They are crimes of opportunity. They pick what appears to be a simple target. If they see a greater risk than they anticipated, they move onto a safer target. Therefore the more effort you take to keep your home from seeming to be a simple target, the safer you will be.

Security experts are unanimous in agreeing that the gate is a secure yard's Achilles heel. Most burglars enter the yard premises via the gate (either by breaking into it or climbing over it), despite the fact that in many cases this can be a mistake on the part of the burglars; if I were a burglar—I would choose to enter a yard by climbing over, or cutting through, one of the hidden side fences surrounding the house. The gate is probably the worst tactical point of entry a burglar could choose. This is because the gate is usually located at the front of the house, which is, more often than not, a lighted and public place – the one place any sane burglar should want to avoid.

Purchasing a fence is no simple task. When faced with the mind boggling array the market has to offer, many consumers become confused. In addition, practically nobody has "fence purchasing experience", since the act of buying a fence is not a day to day event (the average person will purchase a fence only once or twice in a lifetime.)

For thousands of years people have used stone to construct attractive fences. Although in large part security measures, they often greatly enhance the aesthetics of property. They may border a street, driveway, promenade, or garden. The material is also versatile and available from many different sources.
